Job Description: My Husky x German Shepherd (Heidi) is a very well behaved dog except for pulling on the leash whilst walking and chucking tantrums when I leave her behind to take our elder Labrador (Bear) for a walk. I feel obliged to walk them both at the same time because it causes me distress when she squeals and carries on as I walk away with Bear as she does not want to be left behind due to anxiety. As a result of Bear walking slow slowly and Heidi walking quickly, the walk becomes very uncomfortable and frustrating for me. I have bought a retractable extension leash so Bear can wander along behind whilst Heidi is determined to pull ahead. I have tried a weighted harness with a long leash which seems to work well though I would like some advice on using this method, as well as a slip lead which works good enough except for the fact that she still often pulls until she is wheezing. I do also walk our dogs separately from one another when I have the time and when my husband is home to keep Heidi company, during which time she settles down quite quickly. We also walk them together in the evenings after dinner to settle them before bed and I will walk Bear whilst my husband walks Heidi, and it seems we have different methods of trying to adjust her behaviour. For example, often times I will turn around and walk Heidi back home to make the point that Im prepared to end our walk or I will walk her backwards and forwards to make her keep pace with me. My husband tries to walk her on a short leash and stops when she starts pulling. We dont know what to do to change her behaviour and would really like some teaching for both her and us especially me, as her pulling really detracts from my experience of the walk and makes me not want to spend time with her.
