Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

As a consultant, I generally arrange for other tradespeople to undertake the work.  I only refer insured businesses that offer guarantees.  The client actively contracts direct with these tradespeople.  Hence I am able to keep my pricing low.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have always been drawn to architecture in general and originally was going to base my career in that field.  Then I found that I was more drawn to how people dress and use their space rather than the space itself.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

After their dishwasher caught on fire, a client came to me asking for a new kitchen.  They originally thought that the new kitchen would just replace the existing one.  I visited the site and started talking with them about how they used the space and what they disliked about the old kitchen.  After this I suggested moving the kitchen to a different location and designing the space around the use of the rooms.  The clients were extremely grateful and love their newly re-designed living/kitchen/meals area.

What do you like most about your job?

The best part of my job is being able to meet new people, discuss their needs and wants and then be able to come up with a great solution.  Working closely with my clients, building this relationship and then realising their dreams is what it is all about.

A customer should always ask for referrals from previous clients, and if they can be contacted to discuss the work undertaken.  This will give the new customer a feeling of this service professional and whether they are suitable or not.

Q:  What is the main difference between a designer and decorator? A:  A designer usually works with the physical aspects of the space where a decorator works with personalising the space and finishes used.

I take great pride in my ability to quickly and efficiently build a great rapport with my clients, understanding their goals and visions.  I also believe that the best form of advertising is through word-of-mouth from my previous clients.

Each customer is treated individually and all our solutions are matched to them, their home and their family.  It is all about the 'personal' experience with Gem'Appelle Designs.  Whether it is purchasing one of our products or engaging us to help re-decorate their whole home.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Typically I need to have met with the client and discussed their requirements.  Each job depends on what they wish to achieve and the best way about achieving this goal.  From there I generally engage quotes from other trades on their behalf and advise as to what really needs to be done.

1.  Being aware of what they are wanting to achieve. 2.  Having an idea of their budget. 3.  Having an estimate of what the work is worth. These three things will help them work with me to achieve their dreams and complete the project.

What makes your pricing competitive?

My pricing is competitive based on the flat rate of my consultations.  I believe in keeping the pricing low so as to help build and develop the relationship between myself and the client without them having to worry about budget blowout.  Without which no interior decorator can do their job.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Generally speaking my services are charged through consultations.  These are a set price and usually take about an hour where I am with the client discussing their ideas and providing solutions that suit.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Just recently I have diversified into kitchen and bathroom design to be able to offer these to my clients.  Prior to this I was developing a range of homewares, linen, soft-furnishings that I offer through direct retail and party-plan.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Since 1999, I have been actively working within the Interior Decorating field, usually in a one-on-one situation with each client.  Originally studying Interior Decoration and recently updating these with Kitchen Design I constantly strive to update my knowledge so that I can pass this knowledge onto my clients.
