Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

The business has Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance.  Design work that does not meet the Client Brief or the regulations of relevant authorities will be amended without charge.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have had a life-long interest in both design and gardens and I have always liked working with people.  It made sense to combine all three when I decided on a career change.  My training simply confirmed that I was on the right path - I enjoy every aspect of what I now do.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

No, I don't have a favourite customer story, they are all special.  I did have one customer who was so enthralled by the look of a design on paper that she wanted to frame it.

What do you like most about your job?

I love to create beautiful spaces that are practical and suit the lifestyle of the people who will use them.  Classic hardscape materials and plants that make a statement with their shape, leaves or flowers are my favourite things to work with.

Customers need to assure themselves that the designer they choose will be responsive to their needs and tastes - the design they pay for should be unique to them and their site.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Accepted Answer

Customers frequently want to know why their plants are not thriving.  Usually the problem is a matter of choosing a plant that is better suited to the microclimate; sometimes improving the soil or the drainage is all that is needed.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

I do not accept more jobs than I can manage in a reasonable period of time.  I am thorough in my site inspections and work within the limits set by Councils and other regulatory bodies.

I keep my business small to ensure that I can offer personal service tailored to the needs of my clients.  Being a design only business, I am not confined to solutions that are specifically tailored to suit a particular construction focus.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

A copy of building plans is always helpful and your budget is critical.  Details of the site and family particulars are part of the initial consultation, which also defines the client brief for the project.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1.  Know what you hope to achieve in your landscaping before you start to talk to any landscape designer. 2.  Work out your budget in advance and be frank in discussions with your designer, who will then tailor the design to suit. 3.  Do your research - photos of landscaping, materials or planting styles you like will save time and money.

I aim to give all my clients the best value for money that I can on every occasion.  This means that every fees proposal is a "special offer" and will be competitive with prices offered by other designers.

What makes your pricing competitive?

Accepted Answer

Lower overheads mean that I can offer a lower hourly rate than many design businesses with a larger staff and a bigger advertising budget.  Moreover, you only pay for what you need to achieve your goal.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Consultations are charged at an hourly rate.  Design projects are quoted based on the size of the project and the types of documentation required.  50% deposit on acceptance of the fees proposal is normally expected.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I like to prepare landscape plans for everything from garden renovations to new residential or commercial developments.  Solving problems presented by difficult sites is a particular interest.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have a Diploma of Landscape Design, a Certificate III in Landscape Construction and a Certificate II in Horticulture (Landscape).  I have practical landscaping experience gained as the owner and administrator of Live Life Landscapes - a Design, Construction and Maintenance business.
