You should ask your architect what you project will look like. Your architect should then ask you what you want it to look like. If they do not offer to hear your preference you should look for another architect.

Most of our clients ask can we get the work approved by council, what will it cost and how long will it take. We give detailed advice based on their own situation.

Dunn Architects provide not only design services, but we also find builders by competitively tendering your project. During construction we arrange and manage your financial security to ensure that all defects are fixed before the builder finishes.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

We need to know your accommodation requirements before we provide a quote. This should be a summary in words such as, "we want an extra bedroom, an ensuite and a carport". It is not necessary for you to sketch any plans of what you want because this will almost always hinder the communication of your requirements. If possible you should indicate a budget, but if you cannot, we will provide an estimated cost of the project.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1: You can save money by carefully thinking about what your accommodation requirements are before you request a quotation. Changes made to the design after each key decision point may result in extra charges if documents need to be changed. We recommend that you collect a scrapbook of images demonstrating any particular features you wish incorporated into the project.  2: You can save money by realistically considering when you need your project completed. Urgent or accelerated projects cost more to provide.  3: If you can obtain as much information on your property as possible this will assist us in economically determining the key factors influencing the design. This information may include old surveys, the contract for sale or land title documents.

What makes your pricing competitive?

We carefully estimate the cost of building work, based on recent project costs, so that our charges (which are based on this estimate) reflect the likely scope of work. We provide written quotations for all property owners. Our quotations are obligation free.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

For projects involving over $80,000 our fees are calculated as a proportion of the construction cost. Our quotation provides full details of the cost of each stage of the process, what work is being done during each stage and how long each stage is likely to take.  For smaller projects we provide a quotation based on the estimated hours of work involved. For very small projects we provide hourly rate charges.

Dunn architects specialise in house, additions, extensions, alterations in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. We also specialise in heritage projects, retail shops and showrooms.

The principal of Dunn Architects, Russell Dunn, has over twenty years experience in architecture and project management.  Dunn Architects’ qualified heritage consultants and architects have experience in preparing designs and Heritage Impact Statements required by councils for work on heritage listed buildings and buildings within Heritage Conservation Areas. We also offer heritage research services.  Our staff are graduates of Sydney University’s respected Master of Heritage Conservation and members of National Trust of Australia - NSW, Royal Australian Historical Society, Sydney Living Museums (formerly Historic Houses Trust) and Australia ICOMOS.
