  I was given a camera as a youngster and loved what I saw through the lens.

• Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

  Lets keep it down to the short version. A client came to me asking for a job to be shot with fixed deadline. I quoted him the price and didn't hear back from him. A week or so later I was having coffee with a local friend photographer who was so excited to tell me about this new client he had picked up. It was the same guy I had quoted the previous week. We chatted about the job he even had a couple of samples of the shoot on him, I could see the client had decided to take the cheaper quote. I could also see a number of technical issues but my friend was so rapped to have picked up a commercial client. Two days later the client lobs back into the studio. Trying to stay cool he says he has decided to accept my quote. We are now three days out from the deadline he told me about a week earlier. I just shake my head and tell him I have bookings that would make it almost impossible. He tells me he definitely needs me. The chat goes back and forward for 10-15 minutes. I tell him to give me a call in an hour and I will see what I can organize. He just stands there and I tell him 'go ..... go now!' I'll make some calls and see what I can shuffle around. As I heard the door to the studio close I realised the coffee pot needs refilling. Well I had my coffee read a couple of magazine articles and saw an hour and a quarter had passed. I picked up the phone, I barely had time to put the phone down when the client was back in the door with the first of the product to be shot. As I told him on the phone it would mean working late into and over night. This was back in the days of film. The job was billed with a significant surcharge, extra courier fees to get the film to and from the lab in time to satisfy the deadline. I nailed the job in record time. You might have realised I didn't have any other bookings I was just annoyed by the client's attitude and lack of understanding of the differences between photographers and their competencies. The client became a regular gaining an understanding of what was really need. Our relationship continued for many years and over a period of time I actually discounted his jobs (kind of a re-imbursement of the monster surcharge on the earlier job) as an acknowledgement that photography is more than just picking up a camera. He also brought me quite a few other good clients.
