Yes I'm insured for public liability up to a very large amount and my deck-work is backed by the product that I use.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I fell into it: a friend asked me to look after his business whilst he took-off for an overseas holiday.  He skilled-me-up to handle the work I now do; I took so naturally to it, I started my own business.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

On one beautiful day far west into the countryside I cleaned a roof.  I spent a good hour chatting with an older gentleman about his philosophy of life which was inspiring and just plain lovely.  There sorts of experiences are grand to me.

What do you like most about your job?

It's pretty simple: I love being outdoors and really enjoy providing a high level of care and service to my clients.  It's about enjoyment for both the customer and I, clearing away old energy and replacing with clean and fresh, light energy - which is always appreciated.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

They should ask for a testimonial if they are looking for a large amount of work to be done.  They should ask how the job was quoted (ie a breakdown so they know why it costs what it does) and make sure that they are insured.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Accepted Answer

Generally questions are about cost and time.  The cost is something I will work with the customer on, to suit there budget and make sure they get value for money.  Timing is usually very easy to answer, as I work 5 days per week and can almost always fit a customer in the same week or week after they call.

Coming from country Tasmania originally, where there is a strong culture of being a 'man-of-my-word', I have built this business almost entirely on the back of word-of-mouth referral.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Because I'm actually interested in what I do and with 7 years as a professional yachtsman, pressure cleaning, washing expensive assets and reconditioning timber is in my blood.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Generally I need to get an idea of the property in question: relating to how many bedrooms, square meters, how many stories, ease of access, how many and what type of windows etc.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Roof Cleaning: ensure there is no vegetation over the roof blocking it. Pressure Cleaning: close all windows and remove any items that would require moving to avoid getting wet. Deck refurbishing: remove pot-plants and bbq's from the area.

I don't discount my work because I know I do really great work.  I certainly can offer a free area to be pressure cleaned with the economies of large scale jobs, or if a client wants a pressure cleaning and timber maintenance combination for example, often I will work-out a good deal due to gear all being set-up already.

What makes your pricing competitive?

I run with very low overheads and as a one-man-band with 2 casual employees to call upon, I can handle any size of job.  I also use the most efficient equipment available.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I charge on a fixed-quote basis which protects all of my customers (they feel really safe with knowing there's never any suprises) and it's great for me and my team to achieve a defined goal efficiently.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I specialise in roof cleaning, pressure cleaning and timber maintenance.  I say this because I love to clear away the old energy with the water and then make it feel great with pristine timber finishes.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I'm a professional yachtsman by trade.  I say that because all of the training required for my current line of work, is well above your average tradesman/ handy man.  The standard to which I work and the level of detail is second to none.  I have all the appropriate tickets to work at height and great gear to do the job safely and efficiently.
