Yes. Hopkan Partners holds professional indemnity insurance, and all work is carried out by a CPA-qualified accountant. We stand behind what we produce — if something isn't right, we'll fix it. We'd rather be held accountable than give you a reason to second-guess your numbers.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I spent over a decade working in financial and management accounting roles at ASX-listed companies and multinationals. Over time I saw a real gap — small business owners were drowning in their own numbers without anyone to explain what they actually meant. I started Hopkan Partners so that business owners could get the kind of financial clarity that larger companies take for granted, but without hiring a full finance team.

The moment a business owner finally understands their numbers. A lot of people running a business have been told what the figures are, but nobody's sat down and explained what those figures mean for decisions they need to make. When that clicks, it changes how they run the business. That's genuinely satisfying work.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

- Do you go beyond data entry, or do you just record transactions?  - How often will we meet to discuss the numbers?  - Are you a qualified CPA, and do you carry professional indemnity insurance?  - How do you handle it if you find an error in prior work?  - How do you charge? A fixed monthly fee gives you certainty; hourly billing can get unpredictable fast.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

"Do I really need a bookkeeper if I'm already using Xero?" — Software records the transactions, but it doesn't interpret them. Xero won't tell you why your margins are tightening or whether you can afford to hire. That's where we come in.   "How much does it cost?" — We charge a fixed monthly fee based on the scope of work, so there are no surprises.   "What's included?" — Bookkeeping, reconciliation, financial reporting, and a regular review meeting. Tax compliance can be added if needed.

Formal qualifications matter — I'm a CPA and a Xero Certified Advisor — but what I'd point to more is background. I've worked in environments where the numbers had to be right, and where financial reporting was scrutinised at board and audit level. That standard doesn't lower just because a client is a small business. You get the same rigour, applied to your books.

Most bookkeeping firms stop at keeping your records tidy. We use the same analytical approach that corporate finance teams apply to large businesses — margin analysis, cash flow review, cost structure assessment — and we apply it to yours. If you want someone who will tell you what your numbers actually mean and what you can do about them, we're a better fit than a firm that just keeps the books and moves on.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Your annual turnover and the number of transactions per month, whether your books are current or need catching up, the number of bank accounts and credit cards we'll be reconciling, whether you're registered for GST and payroll, and whether you need tax compliance as well or just bookkeeping and reporting. A short conversation covers all of this quickly.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Get your records in order before we begin. Chasing missing receipts or reconciling months of backlog takes time — that time costs money. Even organising digital copies of invoices and bank statements will reduce the catch-up work significantly.   2. Use accounting software consistently. If you're already on Xero or MYOB, make sure bank feeds are connected and transactions aren't sitting unreconciled. Clean data means less time spent on clean-up.   3. Be clear on what you actually need. Bundling services you don't use adds cost. If you only need bookkeeping and reporting, say so — we'll scope accordingly.

We charge a flat monthly fee rather than billing by the hour. You know the cost upfront, and it doesn't change if a month is busier than expected. For what's included — qualified bookkeeping, Xero management, financial reporting, and a regular review meeting — the pricing reflects a level of service that most small businesses would otherwise only access by hiring an in-house finance person.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Fixed monthly retainer, agreed upfront. The fee is based on the size and complexity of the business — primarily transaction volume, payroll, and the services included. There are no hourly surprises or ad hoc charges for routine questions. If scope changes materially, we'll discuss it before adjusting anything.
