How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I started DJing twenty years ago, at the age of 14. I was taught to DJ by a local Youth Worker and given a couple of early gigs at local government-funded youth discos. I loved it. I've always loved music and I enjoy sharing it with others. I love the thrill when of seeing people dance to the music I play. Pretty soon I was orgainising my high school's first school disco so I could DJ for my school friends. By the age of 20 I had saved up enough money to buy all my own equipment and start my own mobile DJ business. The rest is history! I have since DJ'd at every kind of function imaginable and I still love it!

What do you like most about your job?

I love music and I enjoy helping other people have a good time. When I am not DJing at a gig, I am still working with music in some capacity. During the day, I run 'Hawkesbury Music Studio' where I primarily edit and mix dance routine music for professional dancers all over the world. I also write and record songs of my own and am occasionally hired to record and mix songs for others as well. Music is a life-long passion of mine and thus to be a DJ is as natural to me as breathing.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

There is no such thing as a DJ licence. No industry recognised qualifications. An ABN is free. Public liability insurance for a DJ is almost always unnecessary and the rest of the time does nothing more than make the DJ FEEL more professional. It does not add any additional value to their service.  So how does one tell the professionals from the rest? These questions will help:   1. How big is your music collection?  (With First Choice DJs, you have over 40,000 songs to chose from.)  2. What styles of music do you have?  (We have every genre imaginable: Oldies (30s, 40s, 50s & 60s), Retro (70s, 80s & 90s), Modern (2000 to the current Top 40), Country, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Disco, Soul, Latin, Rock 'n' Roll, Australian, kids music, Rap, Hip Hop, RnB, Dubstep, Dance, Techno, Trance, NRG, Rock, Grunge, Heavy Metal and more!)  3. Will you have a song list available to help us choose songs? (We do.)  4. How much experience will my DJ have? Will I get to speak to the DJ directly before the night?  (When you book with First Choice DJs, you will most likely (except in rare circumstances) have the owner, James, personally as your DJ. One way to assess how serious a DJ is about providing a quality service is to ask "what kind of speakers do you use?"  (The best brands are JBL, QSC & Evy. All other brands are cheap alternatives and do not sound as good. Additionally, a serious DJ will invest in speakers with 15" cones. Speakers with 12" or 10" cones cannot produce the low frequencies in the music and should not be considered adequate for professional use.)

What makes your pricing competitive?

First Choice DJs is a small business not currently required to charge GST. This is a big plus for all customers hosting private functions, as it automatically allows us to charge 10% less for our services than we would otherwise need to - a saving which we pass on to you.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

Prices:  Our prices vary depending on the type and length of the function (and in some cases the location). Generally, our packages include either 4 or 5 hours of music (depending on the type of function) and come with the option to have have the DJ play overtime - a choice that can be made on the night.  Please contact us for prices and availability.  Booking info:  For weddings I usually ask that the full amount be paid before the day, however if you want to start with a $100 deposit to confirm the booking and pay the rest later, that is up to you. (As long as the full amount is received no later than 2 weeks before the day.)   For all other functions, I usually ask that a deposit of at least $100 is paid to confirm the booking. The remaining amount (and any overtime payments) can be paid in cash on the day.
