Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

As a qualified Lawyer I must hold or work under professional indemnity insurance... I can't get the correct practicing certificate without it. The Law Society of NSW is very strict at regulating law practices in NSW so non-compliance is not an option.  I also possess other relevant business insurances where required

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I never ever thought I wanted to be in business or corporate, Although I always wanted to be a lawyer I never thought I could do it. I truly thought I was destined for human services jobs like the police, Juvenile Justice and community Services. but through my time studying to be a lawyer I became a manager in a government agency and realized I am a problem solver. People have a problem I am good at finding a solution... Then I found this whole area of people called Business owners tht no matter how successful the business have needs to be addressed and helping small businesses succeed is just as promising for the community as human services. small to medium business accounts for more than 90% of all business in Australia. That's a lot of people needing help

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Oh yes.... A client that approached me because they received a court claim from someone they owed money too.... We managed to avoid court and make a payment plan, which the client was more than happy to maintain. whilst sorting all that it became apparent the client (who was a roofer) was a great Tradie but a bad book keeper and had no idea about BAS and GST reporting to the ATO.... After a little bit of resistance, I encouraged him to part with a reasonable amount each quarter to have the bookkeeping done for him, which meant bills were paid on time and the client was far less stressed as he was able to just focus on why he knows... Roofing!

What do you like most about your job?

Flexibility (I know the answer should be helping people, but I have to be honest) I like the flexibility in my hours and Jobs.... I hate mornings so except for a few random early days I can meet clients at their convenience which is usually after standard business hours, weekends and public holidays (all without extra charges) we are also happy to meet the client in their house of that suits them and save getting a babysitter for young kids

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

For legal services there MUST be a costs agreement/ disclosure outlining the costs and charges expected for the job. For non-lawyer services we still have an engagement letter so everyone is clear on expectations and no one is surprised if things are or are not done. Clients should ask when payment will need to be made (up front in trust, payment upon being invoiced or a monthly or quarterly agreement) Price of course is a necessary question and it's ok... We expect you to ask what costs are involved

Cost- answer depends on the job Most questions I get asked are about legal rights and how to do common things to comply worth he law (register a business, make a will, make orders in family law matters) my answer is specific and based on getting the job done

This is interesting as trust is built.... I think clients like me because I am there for them via e-mail, text etc and it's not contingent on me billing them for the contact. Further, I think that I don't over promise... If I can't do something and don't have someone who can... I will tell you... But I will help you find someone. I expect to be pid, but I am not focussed on money... Clients are happy to pay so long as they can see progress or an outcome. This I am good at

You are a Small Business, SME, start-up or even just looking into going out on your own. You know bits and pieces about starting a business... Like getting an ABN, but you don't know it all and worse still you don't know who to contact to help you with it. He job to be quoted, some back ground information, any work you have already tried and the budget you have for the job. These days it is important to confirm Identity so if you have a document with all your personal details and he names of other parties or people to be dealt with as well as a copy of drivers licence, passport, birth certificate etc

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Having paperwork sorted so: Tax returns - put all your deductions on an excel spreadsheet under the category it can be claimed. If your not sure if it can be claimed put it down and we can help you work it out. Legal Work- collect as much evidence as you can and be willing to do some of the work... So if you have to collect a debt off a client who won't pay make sure you have the agreement (this may be a quote) any e-mails between you and he client about the agreed work and the invoice you sent to the client. Make photo copies for the lawyer before you come... Saves time and money.

Why pay a lawyer to handle your company secretarial services when we can charge at a lower rate even though you get the service performed by a solicitor. that's right for many of our services you have a qualified professional solicitor charging at a much lower rate... We separate the work based on what it is... Not who is doing it.... So tax accounting, or ATO problems and objections  are charged at local rates not the rate of a lawyer. talk to us for more information on this

How do you normally charge for your service?

We generally charge on a flat fee-for-service basis, even with direct Law services we like to try and give the client a price they know they can meet. There are some times when a flat fee can't be charged because we can't give a clear estimate on how long a matter or job will take but we will work with the client and ensure they know what hey are up to before we do any works outside their allocated budget... Even with court litigation we can agree on a price before hand or for each stage in the litigation. But other services such as setting up a company, applying for an ABN, tax returns, company secretarial work, property law, leases, wills etc are all flat fee as agreed

Helping people! And that's the basis of our business... The principal director comes from a policing and Juvenile Justice background where helping people in need and in trouble that can't help themselves is the core work. This has been re-applied in a commercial context with a focus on helping Business, their owners and their families. the director is often criticized for helping people 'too much' what has happened to the world where someone is criticized fort shy ethos....
